WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) was appointed by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer – the 2nd highest ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives – to serve as a Senior Democratic Whip for the 114th Congress. Senior Whips are charged with mobilizing the Democratic vote, acting as a liaison between members and Democratic leadership, and coordinating legislative strategy.

“I’m honored Whip Hoyer has placed his trust in me to serve as a Senior Democratic Whip,” said U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela. “This is an excellent opportunity to be a part of the strategy that will move Congress in a direction that represents the will of the American people and our nation on a path of continual growth.”

“I am pleased to announce that Rep. Filemon Vela will serve as a Senior Whip in the 114th Congress,” stated Whip Hoyer. “As a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Blue Dog Coalition, Rep. Vela brings an important perspective to the table. I look forward to working with him in his new role to advance Democrats’ priorities of job creation and expanding middle class opportunities.”

The Senior Whip team is composed of leaders from across the Democratic Caucus.  They meet once a week, when Congress is in session.  During these meetings, the Senior Whips have a forward-looking, strategic discussion on the key issues facing our nation.  Senior Whips are also responsible for talking to their fellow Democratic members about upcoming legislation that will be considered in the House.
