Saved from the breakers

By STEVE HATHCOCK

Captain Hendricks of the schooner George Locke brings information regarding the beaching of the schooner Maggie, which went ashore on Padre Island some time ago. The Locke rendered assistance in getting the disabled schooner out of the breakers, from which place she was taken to the flats off Brazos de Santiago lighthouse. When found after going ashore, there were two planks gone from her bottom, and her stern post was missing.

Parties in Point Isabel and Brownsville purchased her and her cargo, most of which was saved, for $900. She will be temporarily repaired at Brazos de Santiago, after which she will be put in either at Corpus or this port, where she will undergo a general overhauling. Her running and standing rigging was in good order, and she will probably, when repaired, engage in the same trade as heretofore. ( Galveston Daily News, April 5, 1890)

Navy To Enlist Feathered Messengers: They Will Serve as Couriers to and From the Fleet

Washington, April 25 – In a significant move, the government has opted to employ homing pigeons as war messengers between the United States fleet and the mainland. This decision, widely regarded as a strategic one, is expected to greatly enhance communication in the service. Lieutenant Carter of the Brookly navy yard has already procured 2000 pigeons, and an additional 8000 will be acquired as soon as possible. (The Brownsville Herald, April 29, 1898)
