New health clinic opening in LV

Special to the PRESS

Officials with the City of Laguna Vista announced last week that they anticipate the opening of a new health clinic within the city limits.

This clinic, operated by Brownsville Community Health Center, is doing business as New Horizon Medical Center and is finalizing plans to provide comprehensive medical care to the town’s citizens. This new addition to the community will bring a range of health services, ensuring that residents have access to quality healthcare close to home.

In a statement, Laguna Vista Mayor Michael Carter noted that New Horizon provides adult medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, laboratory, immunizations, pharmacy, and more services. It contracts with Valley Regional Hospital and Valley Baptist and accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare (and Medicare Supplementals), Medicaid, Blue Cross, Humana, and others.

The company has been in business since 1940 and operates various clinics around the Valley. Its clinics have received numerous awards from the Health Resources and Services Administration, including Health Center Quality Leader, Health Disparities Reducer, and Access Enhancer, according to the Mayor.

The past year has generated tremendous healthcare-related discussion within the community, the Mayor noted. Implementing an enhanced, funded, and fully staffed FRO (First Responder Organization) has ensured that Laguna Vista residents have life-saving services on call 24/7. The volunteer system it enhanced was pushed to its limits prior, with emergency calls up over 40% in 2024. Additionally, the FRO system, as implemented, is an essential first step towards a self-sufficient ambulance service that the City Council envisions as a town service one day.

The Mayor goes on to add, “Additionally, in close collaboration with the community, your City Council worked tirelessly behind the scenes to build relationships with prospective Health Clinic Providers after the UTRGV Clinic shut its doors. Your active participation and support were crucial in this process.”

The Mayor added that while progress has sometimes been slower than everyone wished, the City Council appreciates those who worked with them collaboratively to investigate all possible leads in establishing a Clinic for the Town’s residents. “Truly, those of you who supported us with your cooperation and confidence have seen your patience rewarded with this announcement,” said the Mayor.

“Finally, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Rendie Gonzales, our City Manager, for all her hours working with Community Leaders throughout the Valley as she promoted the benefits our Town could offer a new Clinic.”

The Mayor went on to remark that her steadfast commitment to the community has produced results that all residents can enjoy. “This new Clinic was only a possibility with her tireless efforts. We also thank the Community for your patience and support during this process. Your understanding and cooperation have been invaluable,” reads his statement.

More details regarding insurance, services, and opening dates will be shared as New Horizon prepares its announcement in the coming days, the Mayor noted. The clinic will be located at 723 Santa Isabel Blvd., Suite G, in Laguna Vista. “We eagerly anticipate the grand opening and encourage you to stay tuned as New Horizon moves toward this exciting event,” concluded the Mayor.
