Earth Day event scheduled

The City of South Padre Island Environmental Health Services Department (EHSD) is hosting a significant Earth Day E-Waste Recycling Event. This event, taking place on Saturday, April 20, from 8 -11 a.m. at the South Padre Island Community Center at 4501 Padre Boulevard, is a crucial step towards a more sustainable future.

According to a press release distributed by the city of SPI, the Environmental Protection Agency reports that United States consumers and businesses discarded 2.37 million tons of televisions, computers, cell phones, and hard-copy peripherals (including printers, scanners, and faxes) per year.

The recycling collection is only approximately twenty-five percent of these electronics, with the remainder disposed of primarily in landfills, where there’s no recovery to fight precious metals.

As reported to the PRESS, chemicals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury in e-waste are highly hazardous to our health. EHSD and its partners aim to provide an opportunity for safe and responsible recycling of unwanted electronics.

Victor Baldovinos, Environmental Health director, said, “This is a great opportunity for our community to dispose of electronics properly,” He added, “By participating, you will reduce the negative impact that improper disposal of e-waste would otherwise have on our delicate environment.”
Friends of Animal Rescue Center, Republic Services, RDA Technologies, and Sea Turtle Inc. are vendors participating.

The community is encouraged to bring all their unwanted electronics, including televisions, computers, cell phones, and hard-copy peripherals (such as printers, scanners, and faxes), and regular recycling to this one-stop Earth Day E-Waste Recycling Event.
