Cameron County Beach Patrol responded to a call for a swimmer in distress near Beach Access No. 5 Monday as crowds inundated South Padre Island beaches for Memorial Day.

The man, described as a Hispanic male in his 50’s, was transported to Valley Regional Hospital in Brownsville, said Michael Johnson, chief of the Cameron County Beach Patrol.

Beach Patrol rescuers arrived at Beach Access No. 4 where they found a bystander performing CPR on the swimmer. Rescuers took over performing the procedure, Johnson said.

“There is some confusion with how he ended up in the water,” Johnson said. According to witnesses, the man walked away from the group of friends he was with, but was discovered in a place different than his intended area of travel.
