SPI selects new Shoreline Director

As the City of South Padre Island began the transition of their Coastal Resource and Parks Department to the renamed and repurposed Shoreline Management Department, the unexpected resignation of department head Reuben Treviño caused a disruption in the plans. The creation of the Shoreline Department was intended to provide focus and resources for both of the City’s shorelines – the beach and the bay – rather than solely the beach. Before his resignation, Treviño was expected to fill the director position for the new department, and after nearly a month long search the City has selected not one, but two candidates to get things moving along.

Initially, the City intended to fill the Shoreline Director position and follow up with the selection of a Program Project Manager, but after conducting interviews on March 29, the selection committee — consisting of members of the City Council, Shoreline Task Force, and City staff — were so impressed by two of the candidates that they decided to fill both the position of Shoreline Director and Shoreline Program Project Manager.
