City parks updates

South Padre Island city parks have been getting some much needed attention by the City’s Public Works Department over the last couple months. Public Works Director Armando Gutierrez gave the Parks, Recreation, and Beautification Committee and update on park maintenance at their meeting last week. Staff has also been hard at work on phase one of the new John L. Tompkins City Park, and Gutierrez filled the committee in on the progress.

Over the past few months, the Parks Committee, though still active with holiday events, has taken a more watchful role over maintenance of current City parks, taking photos of aesthetic and safety issues to recommend to staff and the City Council for repair. Public Works has been very responsive, assessing rust issues, repainting tables and benches, and removing any potentially dangerous plants. Most recently, the City hand painted and replaced the turtle statues at Morningside Park. Plans for future repairs include replacement of the basketball backboard at Water Tower Park along with improved lighting, as well as the potential addition of a shuffleboard court at Morningside Park, and continuing improvements as needed.
