Port Isabel Tarpon powerlifter John Ray Martinez placed 2nd in his weight division at a meet at Edinburg Vela High School last Saturday.
Franchesca Sandoval was the only Lady Tarpon lifter to register a total lift at the Edinburg meet, and Dagen Wise-Herring and Juan Mireles were the other Tarpon lifters to complete a total lift. Wise-Herring was 9th in the 181-pound weight class and Mireles was 6th in the 275-pound division.
Martinez (198-pound class) managed 535 pounds for his best attempt on the squat lift, 350 pounds in the bench press, and 480 pounds on the dead lift. It all added up to total lift of 1,365 pounds. That was a personal best, as was his bench press and dead lift.
