Writer’s Block: So Long, 2015!

Here we are at the twilight of another year. These past 12 months have flown by so fast and now a new year greets us with new opportunities, new possibilities, new resolutions.

Looking over the resolutions I made at the beginning of this year, I see that I haven’t accomplished many — well, at least when it’s come to fitness and exercise. But I don’t view that as a failure, rather, I look at it as an opportunity to recommit to that resolution and try again this coming year.

And if I haven’t met my fitness goals, it’s not because I’ve been slacking off. It’s been a whirlwind year — one filled with many lessons learned, both easy and difficult. I began as editor of the Port Isabel – South Padre Press and the South Padre Parade just in time for the Jan. 1, 2015 editions. Surrounded by an excellent staff and talented freelancers, we hit the ground running, but there was still a lot for me to learn.

One of the most enjoyable things I’ve had the pleasure of learning during my tenure here is what a special community exists here. Though I’m from the upper Valley, the Laguna Madre has been a familiar place my entire life, but it’s been this year that I’ve really started to learn the ins and outs of the area. I think I’ve finally started to learn what makes this place tick.

It’s definitely unique compared to other regions in the Rio Grande Valley. And one thing I have seen over and over again is just how generous and welcoming this community can be. From city meetings, to those sometimes grim phone calls with law enforcement when tragic news breaks, to that neighbor I always seem to run into at HEB, there’s always a sense of familiarity. Overwhelmingly, the people here are helpful, friendly, cheerful and patient. I guess it’s part of that Island lifestyle that seems to permeate these coastal communities. I think it’s something I could get used to.

So to all the people I’ve met and worked with this year, thank you for being excellent teachers. We here at the Press and Parade look forward to continuing to work with and serve you. May this new year bring you many blessings, much prosperity, and lots of laughter.
