The Port Isabel Tarpons will make the short trip to Rio Hondo this Friday for their second district game of the season and first on the road.
The Bobcats come in with a 4-1 record overall and 1-0 in district play after last week’s 26-0 home win over West Oso. P.I. is also 4-1 and 1-0 after last Friday’s 33-13 victory over Progreso in Tarpon Stadium.
The Rio Hondo offense is led by senior quarterback Daniel Flores, who has passed for 550 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 339 yards and two scores.
On the other side of the ball, defensive end Albert Magallanes has 6.5 of the team’s total of 25 quarterback sacks.
Rio Hondo counters the Tarpons’ Williams Romero with a pretty good kicker of its own in Danny Cucul, who has made two of three field goal attempts. Romero’s – he’s four for four – longest FG came from 30 yards out, and Cucul has made one from 36 yards.
Last year at Tarpon Stadium Rio Hondo ran four yards for a touchdown with 34 seconds left in the game to win 21-14.
