Roughly 20 gallons of displaced oil was spotted in the water near the South Point Marina around 7 a.m. Tuesday. The spill was quickly contained and cleared by local Oil Spill Prevention and Response Team members with the application of solvents. The Coast Guard insists the incident does not pose a threat to the environment and samples were collected by Texas General Land Office officials (GLO) to determine the source and make of the displaced oil. The area was revisited the following day to be certain all the oil had been removed.
Any spotted oil spills should be reported to GLO at 1-800-832-8224.
