Grown-ups weren’t the only folks observing National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this past weekend. Students, as well as a number of parents, at Garriga Elementary also took part in a walk of their own Friday as students dressed in pink and carried signs calling for the demise of breast cancer. The participants walked from Garriga to Washington Park where they were met by members of the campus PTA who served refreshments and treats. Among those seen here are buds Walter Ronaldo Barrios and Julio Lara, who aren’t afraid to wear pink, Emily Villanueva donning the pink cap and Chelsea Gonzalez who’s seen walking with her father walking on what happened to be her birthday. Special to the PRESS

The City of Port Isabel along with the Museums of Port Isabel and the Port Isabel Economic Development Corporation team up to put on a day of festivities for the community. On Saturday, Oct. 29 the park behind the Museum of Port Isabel was full of tents, children in costumes and dancing to celebrate the Annual City of Port Isabel Community Street Dance.

The activities of the event included food and arts and crafts booths, a play by Gloria Bates called “Las Tres Lloronas,” costume contests and a live band performance.

One of the busiest booths was Lulu’s Menudo booth. Menudo is a traditional Mexican soup made with tripe in a clear broth and is served with lime, chopped onions and cilantro. While eating a bowl of menudo and interviewing the ladies of this booth, more than five people came for the steaming soup. Lulu Nunuz said of her soup, “It is a great soup to eat in winter and is also known to get rid of hangovers.”

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the residents of Port Isabel and South Padre Island show their support by going pink.

Throughout the month, there have been many events supporting breast cancer awareness, such as the Walk for Women and Zumbathon. Port Isabel schools have also showed their support by incorporating their own walks. Throughout the month, many local residents and business will show their support by wearing pink. Though the month of October is reserved for breast cancer awareness, it is just not this month that individuals will see breast cancer awareness pink.

On Sept. 30, women and men around the Rio Grande Valley gathered in Port Isabel for the eighth Annual Walk for Women. The three-day event is hosted by Walk for Women, Inc. which is an organization initiated by local women to heighten breast cancer awareness and to raise money for the area residents affected by this disease and who are in need of financial assistance.

Special to the PRESS

On Saturday, Oct. 1, 40 volunteers gathered with Surfrider Foundation South Texas Chapter and removed over 300 pounds of plastic trash from Andy Bowie Park on South Padre Island.

In order to better educate the public on beach litter, the Surfrider Foundation has declared the month of October “Raptober” and kicked it off with the One Foot At A Time Plastic Cleanup event. The idea is simple; collect 1,000 square feet of plastic from beaches across the United States.

Adults and children alike combed the beach and sand dunes picking up plastic and all types of litter.

By LAUREN LAUGHLIN
Special to the PRESS

On Saturday, Sept. 24 more than 1,000 people gathered along South Padre Island beaches for the 25th annual Adopt-A-Beach Fall Cleanup. Volunteers throughout the state of Texas picked up an estimated 20 tons of trash and debris, including plastic bottles and bags which are harmful to sea life.

The motto of the morning was “Don’t trash Texas beaches.” A message The Texas General Land Office has been sending across the state for 25 years. Since the first cleanup in 1986, more than 422,000 Texas Adopt-A-Beach volunteers have picked up more than 8,100 tons of trash from Texas beaches, some of it originating from as far away as South America.

Due to tide patterns in the Gulf of Mexico, trash dumped anywhere in the gulf is likely to end up on a Texas beach. Volunteers’ record information such as the source and type of debris collected on data cards provided by Ocean Conservancy. This data has been instrumental in the passage of international treaties and laws aimed at reducing the amount of offshore dumping.
