SPI approves annexation

The South Padre Island City Council held a Special Called Meeting Wednesday, November 14.

The council approved the second and final reading of Ordinance No. 12-15 adopting the City of South Padre Island 2012 Service Plan and annexation of the following tracts of land located in the City of South Padre Island extraterritorial jurisdiction: Tract #1 A 22.01 acre tract, located east of Padre Boulevard right-of-way, abutting the Schlitterbahn Water Park and generally known as the Jeremiah tract; Tract #2 A 87.83 acre tract, located west of Padre Boulevard right-of-way, including the KOA Campground, Pier 19 restaurant, submerged land, Dirty Al’s restaurant; Tract #3 A 172.91 acre tract, located west of the existing city limits, submerged lands, portion of Tompkins Channel; Tract #4 A 10 acre tract, located east of Padre Boulevard right-of-way, north of the La Quinta Hotel, known as the Hilton tract; Tract #5 A 106 acre tract, located east of the Padre Boulevard right-of-way and east of the existing city limits, from the Isla Blanca Park, to the Surf Circle Beach Access.

The council also approved Resolution No. 2012-36, canvassing the returns and declaring the results of the November 6 general election. Incumbent Sam A. Listi retained the Place 3 seat with 508 votes along with incumbent Alita Bagley, who retained the Place 5 seat with 478 votes. New councilman Alex Avalos took the Place 2 seat with 482 votes.

Avalos worked on South Padre Island for 17 years before opening the Alex Avalos Printing Company in 2002. He has also been active in city government, having served on the SPI Governmental Affairs Committee for six years, as Chairman for the SPI Ad Hoc City Hall Advisory Board and on the Board of Directors for the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce for six years. Avalos said he brings diversity in thinking to the council and is focused on ensuring the city uses its resources to have a positive impact on the different populations that make up South Padre Island, including retirees, younger residents and businesses.

“I want for that dollar to have a multiple effect on the community,” said Avalos. “I love this town and I’m glad to contribute to a community that has done a lot for me.”
