The SPI Convention & Visitors Advisory Board heard presentations regarding Island conventions and events, Conventions and Visitors Board reports, as well as media and market planning at its August 24th meeting.
Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce President Betty Wells made a presentation to the Board regarding the 2nd Annual Summer Longest Causeway Run & Fitness Walk which was held on June 4. She stated 1,673 people participated in this year’s event. She shared a written report which included participant survey results and data on overnight stays by participants in conjunction with the event. 32 percent of participants stayed overnight on SPI and 10 percent of participants stayed overnight in Port Isabel. Wells thanked the Board for their continued support for the event.
The Board approved a request for $2,000 to be used by the SPI Birding and Nature Center to promote and advertise the Winter Outdoor Wildlife Expo scheduled for Tuesday, January 31, 2017- Saturday, February 4, 2017, at the Birding and Nature Center. The event attracted about 1,300 people last year according to Cristin Howard, director of the Center. She stated she would like to increase attendance at the event by about 400-500 in 2017. “We will be doing heavy advertising in the local area newspapers and I will be attending the (Winter Texan) Expo in McAllen about two weeks prior to the event,” added Howard. The plan also includes providing fliers promoting the event to RV Parks throughout the RGV.
