The City of South Padre Island Parks, Recreation And Beautification Committee met on August 17th to discuss enhancements at the SPI Community Center as well as other parks related projects.
Darla Jones, SPI Interim City Manager reported that “we’re done” regarding completion of some final construction items at the new John L. Tompkins Park, including installing a water fountain and signs on the bathroom doors. She stated that they are tentatively looking at the morning of September 9th for the ribbon cutting ceremony, but that date has not been finalized yet. Dr. Sungman Kim, SPI Development Director added that they should know by January 1st if the City will receive a grant to help fund a skate park at the location.
