Among a lengthy list of items up for discussion, the Port Isabel City Commission decided Tuesday to change the hours of operation for the Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter and approved several upcoming community events.

In an effort to reduce overhead at the shelter City Manager Jared Hockema recommended that the Commission change its hours of operation to Monday through Friday and close on weekends. The shelter, he said, experiences its lowest traffic numbers during the weekend. Closing the shelter on weekends would also allow staff to devote time to adoption drives which are periodically held outside local storefronts. The commission approved the recommendation unanimously.

In other news, fall is a busy time for the City in regards to community entertainment and celebration events. To that end, the Commission approved the hosting or support of several upcoming events.

First, the Commission approved a sponsorship of the 23rd Annual Shrimp Cook-off, which is hosted by the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce. “This is not an actual monetary sponsorship; our employees go and provide in-kind services,” Hockema explained to the Commission. Such services include things such as cleanup after the cook-off.

This year’s cook-off will take place on Sunday, Nov. 6 beginning at 10 a.m.
