The Keep SPI Beautiful Committee discussed plans for upcoming events and projects during their monthly meeting held on Thursday, Aug. 11.
In conjunction with Keep Texas Beautiful, the committee is planning their first annual Laguna Madre cleanup to be held on Saturday, Sept. 24. The bayside event is planned to kick off at 8 a.m. at Jim’s Pier. “This year we decided that we are Keep South Padre Island Beautiful and not Keep South Padre Beach Beautiful, so we started taking on more programs that affected the entire island,” said Committee chair Susan Dalton.
The event will coincide with other beach cleanups on that same day sponsored by the Texas General Land Office (GLO), but Dalton stated that it shouldn’t be a problem and that there is room enough for both groups. She also stated that Bridgestone Tires had agreed to recycle any tires recovered during the cleanup.
The committee has also secured the donation of kayaks and safety vests to be used by volunteers out on the bay as a part of the cleanup effort while Keep Texas Beautiful will be providing the pickers, gloves and bags.
