The South Padre Island Shoreline Taskforce focused their discussions on updates of local studies of dune erosion and beach nourishment projects.

First up, Shelby Bessette, a graduate student from UTRGV who is in the process of completing her student internship program, shared findings from the data she collected regarding the South Padre Island shoreline. She conducted surveys of people taken at different times of the year to determine their awareness and opinions about beach related issues.

The survey results indicated that many people were aware of beach erosion and agreed with the benefits of beach restoration efforts. The surveys also indicated that many visitors to the beach on the Island feel that parking and public restrooms are currently inadequate. Evidence of dune erosion was also presented as well as recommendations on strategies to better protect and preserve the dunes.
