After eight of service to the City of Port Isabel, Chief of Police Gualberto “Wally” Gonzalez has announced his retirement.

The chief announced his retirement at a press conference held at City Hall Friday afternoon, where he was joined by City Manager Jared Hockema.

“I’m sincere about this from the bottom of my heart,” the chief said. “I believe in God putting me here and I believe in God letting me know to end this journey,” he continued.

Gonzalez cited health issues as part of the reason he came to his decision.

The chief became visibly moved as he offered gratitude to his family for their continued support during his tenure as the City’s top law enforcement officer. “This is my community — three generations of being here. My father, my grandfathers on both sides of my family,” he said.
