The Port Isabel City Commission approved a search for a new code enforcement officer by a vote of 3-2 Tuesday evening.

The decision came after a lengthy discussion between commissioners, the city manager, and the fire marshal.

At a recent meeting, the Commission voted to combine the duties of the City’s two animal control officers with the code enforcement department, but concerns remained as to whether or not the City’s code enforcement needs were being adequately met.

“I put this on the agenda because I believe that an extra code enforcement position can help us out in various ways,” said Commissioner Jeffery Martinez.

Martinez said he has received complaints from residents over the past several months about code violations around the city, including concerns about weedy lots and bulky trash that has not been removed. “Some of the bulky trash has been there for months,” Martinez said.

Fire Marshall John Sandoval said 30 letters have been distributed to residents about code violations within the last week alone
