With hurricane season well underway, officials urge residents to prepare early, before a potential storm enters the Gulf of Mexico.

Port Isabel City Manager Jared Hockema encouraged Laguna Madre residents to make sure they have prepared their homes, themselves, and even their pets for the possibility of a storm. Hockema suggested homeowners look over their homeowners’ insurance policies and windstorm policies, citing that traditional homeowners’ doesn’t typically cover the type of wind and water damage which can occur during a tropical storm or hurricane.

Cameron County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Hushen stressed the importance of advanced preparations, as well. The County recently underwent a large scale hurricane evacuation simulation that cast hundreds of volunteers in the scenario of carrying out air evacuations.
