Second boat launch site nixed

Saying more public boat launch sites are needed, but the proposed location for a second Laguna Vista marina was wrong, officials here opted against a County-sponsored project at their Tuesday Council meeting.

Cameron County Parks Director Joe Vega told officials that the Cameron County Parks department was interested in partnering with Laguna Vista to create the launch site. “There is limited access in the Laguna Madre area for boat ramps,” he said. “I am here to offer assistance.”

Councilman Gary Meschi expressed concerns about the proposed Hwy. 100 location saying ongoing liability was an issue, as was the cost.

“With the high amount of traffic on 100, it would be hard to turn around a car with a boat in a marina. Think about the possible accidents,” he said.
