Summer is here and South Padre Island committees are in full swing trying to stay ahead of the rush. The various SPI committees are continuing in their missions and aiming to make immediate and long-term improvements from the beach to the bayside.

The Keep South Padre Island Beautiful (KSPIB) committee is as busy as ever planning beach cleanups and aiding in the city’s Anti-Litter Program to educate and encourage visitors to keep trash in the cans and off the beach. The committee plans to add some small scale cleanups throughout the summer and currently have cleanups scheduled for Saturday, July 2, after the Independence Day Parade as well as the July 16 Anti-Litter Mid-Year Celebration. Participants supporting the celebration are expected to include the Boys and Girls Club, Sea Turtle, Inc., Valley Proud Environmental Council, RespetaTu Playa, the Surfrider Foundation, and more.

On top of their cleanup and educational efforts, KSPIB also plans to contact local artists to pursue a trash can painting project, which has been suggested in the past, to encourage a litter-free beach. They have also set up a monofilament recycling program on the bay.
