In the wake of the recent escape of a prisoner from the Port Isabel City Jail, the Port Isabel City Commission has decided to tour the facility and hold a public workshop in order to address any concerns residents may have.

Such was the unanimous decision reached by the Commission at Tuesday night’s regular meeting. Commissioners Martin C. Cantu and Jeffery Martinez were not present at the meeting.

The item was placed on the agenda by Commissioner Carmen Rios. “We have problems in the police department that I want to address,” the commissioner said. “I want to hold this workshop to see where we can help the police department.”

Stating that she and the commission support the police department ‘100 percent,’ Rios nevertheless spoke of addressing the issues that led to the man being able to escape from the facility.

The commission expressed hopes to hear the thoughts of officers and the public during the workshop.
