The Port Isabel Tarpons fell into a hole early at La Feria Monday night and lost in the end, 66-46, in the 12th district game for both teams.
With the loss Port Isabel falls to 1-11 in District 32-4A play. La Feria improves to 10-2 and has clinched a playoff spot.
La Feria is tied with Hidalgo for first place in District 32-4A, both with 10-2 district records. Rio Hondo is third at 9-3 and has clinched a playoff spot along with Hidalgo. Grulla is 7-5 and Zapata is 6-6. Two games remain to be played and the No. 4 playoff seed will be either Grulla or Zapata.
“Once again we were playing the top-ranked team in our district,” P.I. head coach Anthony Velarde told the Press Tuesday. “We hung around, enough to give us a little hope, but we never quite closed in. We missed some free throws … and were not able to convert on a high percentage of our shots.”
The Tarpons trailed 17-6 at the end of one quarter of play, 29-14 at halftime, and 45-29 at the end of three quarters.
