The South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Advisory Board (CVA) met Wednesday morning for an extended meeting to consider funding requests for the year’s upcoming events. CVA members heard from returning applicants to consider the requests on recurring special events to the island.

First up for consideration were running events including the Sand Crab Run in April, Run the Jailbreak coming up in May, and the SPI Marathon scheduled for November. Run the Jailbreak is a 3.5 mile beach obstacle run that has been funded by the city for the past few years. The board has increased funding in the past and maintained the $15,000 request for marketing for this year. The SPI Marathon was also reapproved for its second year. This year, marathon event planners expect to increase numbers from last year’s near 2,700 runners. In addition to many other sponsors including HEB and L&F Distributors, the CVA agreed to fund this year’s event in the amount of $85,000, with $70,000 for marketing and the remaining $15,000 for use of the South Padre Island Convention Centre. Finally, the board approved $4,000 in funding for the Sand Crab Run.
