Early voting underway

Early voting has commenced for elections to fill seats on the Laguna Vista Town Council, the Port Isabel City Commission and the Point Isabel Independent School District Board.

One of the fiercest Port Isabel elections in recent memory is between incumbent Commissioner Guillermo “Memo” Torres and Jeffery Martinez for Place 4. Martin C. Cantu — who was recently reinstated into office — is running unopposed for Place 3. Voting will be held at City Hall at the following dates and times: April 30 – May 2 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and May 4 – 5 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Point Isabel School board looks to fill two vacancies. At Place 1, incumbent Bertha Zamora is running unopposed, while at Place 2, incumbent Rene A. Valdez is being challenged by Alicia Baldovinos and Jimmy Vela.

Early voting by personal appearance will be held at Port Isabel High School and Laguna Vista City Hall during the following dates and times: April 30 – May 1 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sat. May 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and May 4 – 5 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Additionally, voting will be held at City Hall on South Padre Island during the following dates and times: April 30 – May 1 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and May 4 – 5 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Laguna Vista will select candidates vying for three Council seats. The race for Place 4 includes incumbent Leti Keplinger challenged by Jessica Hedrick. Gary Meschi runs unopposed for Place 5, and Place 6 is between incumbent Richard Hinojosa and Nadine Smith and. Early voting for Laguna Vista will occur at City Hall during the following dates and times: April 30 – May 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and May 4 – 5 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
