The drastic weather shift is being cited as the cause of 69 Atlantic green turtles washed ashore on the South Padre Island bay side. Texas Parks and Wildlife collected them and handed them off to caretakers of Sea Turtle Inc. near the Isla Blanca beach for rehabilitation.

“When we have cold fronts come in the water temperature in the Laguna Madre, because it’s so shallow, drops quickly as well,” said Teresa Shumaker, Public Relations and Marketing Assistant for Sea Turtle Inc. “When that happens sometimes the green sea turtles in the area don’t have a chance to make it out into the Gulf of Mexico and that’s what causes them to cold-stun.”
