The war against obesity, diabetes and heart disease in South Texas has, statistically speaking, been difficult, but that doesn’t mean battles aren’t won. In a month dedicated to cancer awareness, the City of Port Isabel and Tu Salud Sí Cuenta are promoting health and nutrition through the city organizing classes in nutrition, gardening and exercise.
The public class this past Wednesday was held at the Beacon Bay Townhomes for residents and enrolled members, and participants were guided by nutritionist Nelly Martinez, part of AgriLife, through a various assortment of commonly consumed foods, beverages, spiced and condiments and were taught not only how to understand labels, but also how their consumption affect the body’s overall health.
