The South Texas Youth Stock Show in San Benito returns in 2013 with a four-day event beginning this week.

The stock show will be held Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 17-20, at the San Benito Municipal Fairgrounds off FM 510.

“We’re accepting entries from all four counties,” Director of Events and Entertainment Kathy Rike said. “Most of them will be from the local FFA and 4H clubs. We’re expecting around 350 students showing livestock and about 300 showing home goods.” The home goods include photos, sewing, horticulture, and other arts.

Also planned will be the South Texas BBQ and Chili Cook-off, starting Friday night and going all through Saturday.

“What will happen is that the contestants for the barbecue cook-off will be cooking all (Friday) night long,” Rike said. “Saturday morning, the chili cookers are planned to arrive and make their own entries.” She added that the deadline for both contests will be at 12 noon Saturday, in which the judges will come and sample their wares.

“We will be having a Taster’s Choice judging for the chili,” Rike further remarked. “People will be able to purchase a ticket for a dollar, and they will be able to stop by the booths to taste and choose the best.” A total of 25 contestants are anticipated to be part of the contests.

Also planned is a car show and contest. All entries should be submitted by Jan. 19, and awards will be given for first, second and third place prizes in two categories based on People’s Choice voting. The entry fee for the contest is $10 on the day of the show, but contestants can pre-register for only $5. The voting itself is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the winners presented at 2 p.m.
