The 2011 Sandcastle Days are underway and are expected to excite seasoned and new visitors this year with an array of displays, activities, vendors and more.

The event is slated for Oct. 19-23 and will be located on the beach near Clayton’s Bar and Grill, on the north end of the Island.

Patrons are invited to “watch as Master Sculptors compete to qualify for the world championship,” according to promoters.

The Master Sculptors are renown throughout the country for their sandy works of art, and many, such as Lucinda “Sandy Feet” Wierenga call South Padre Island home.

In addition to the professionals at work, there will also be amateur contests for those who are ready to get their feet sandy, so to speak.

There will be live music, art booths, cash prizes and even free sand sculpting lessons.

A number of new events this year will be featured to guests. Castles by Candlelight will take place Saturday, Oct. 22, evening on the beach starting at 6:30 p.m. A seafood dinner will be served with all the trappings. Meal tickets will be available for purchase at the show.

Also new this year is the Trashion Fashion Show, “A fun coastal conservancy demonstration of how trash from our beaches can cleverly be turned into haute couture,” promoters said.

Finally, there will be Sandcastles by Candlelight. Castles built by the Masters of Sand will be lit by thousands of tea lights. It is expected to be a sight of great beauty.

General admission is free.
