After opening the 2011 district season with a big win at home last Friday against Zapata, the Port Isabel Tarpons hit the road this week for the fourth time for a game with the Grulla Gators in Rio Grande City.

The Tarpons have a three-game winning streak going, including wins over Raymondville and Brownsville Veterans Memorial prior to vanquishing the Zapata Hawks. “It’s huge,” Tarpon  Head Coach Monty Stumbaugh said in his office this week. “We’ve been able to win our last three…beat three pretty good football teams. The kids are feeling good about themselves and have a little confidence.”

The most important of the three victories was, of course, the one over Zapata. For the first time in several seasons Port Isabel has won their district opener; “We haven’t done that the last (three) years,” Coach Stumbaugh said. “We’ve always had our backs to the wall. In 2008, ’09, and ’10 we lost our first district game.”
