Two years ago, the Port Isabel Tarpons lost to Zapata in overtime after missing a go-ahead field goal with seconds to go in regulation. Also in 2009, the Tarpons lost on a field goal in overtime to Hidalgo. On Friday night, in Tarpon Stadium, the issue was again decided on a placement kick for three points, and this time, it was Port Isabel that got the kick and the win.
Edgar Garcia made a 19-yard field goal with five seconds to play, and the Tarpons pulled one out against the visiting Zapata Hawks, 31-28.
Twice Port Isabel took a two-touchdown lead, and the score was 28-14, Tarpons, with five minutes to go in the third quarter. But the Hawks counter-attacked with two long scoring runs, and with 6:12 to go in the fourth period, the score was tied at 28.
