Citizens are urged to be wary about giving any personal information to individuals over the phone, said Port Isabel Police Chief Gualberto “Wally” Gonzalez.

The signs of danger lie in a string of reports the Port Isabel Police Department (PIPD) from citizens over the year about scams committed over the phone.

According to Chief Gonzalez, these calls are being made by Mexican criminals in jails south of the border. He said his source, an FBI agent, told him that these individuals need money to operate in the jail life and have made it a practice to get different numbers for American citizens and make calls, claiming to be relatives stuck in Mexico needing money.
