Port Isabel High track and field athletes are hard at work this week preparing for the Region IV meet at Corpus Christi Callallen next week.
Four Tarpons have qualified for regional competition in individual events. Two additional athletes will team up with two of the aforementioned to run the 4×400-meter relay. For the Lady Tarpons, a total of 13 competitors will be ready to go in 10 different events.
At a recent practice at Tarpon Stadium head Tarpon track coach Jake Hofstetter briefed the PRESS on the problems of deciding who will make up the metric mile four-man team. “We’re not there yet,” he said. “Blake (Sapp) and C.J. (Boyd) are the two fastest, but they have other events. We have five guys shooting for the other two spots.”
The scheduling of events is a big factor, of course, in deciding who competes in which events. “Blake Sapp will run the 110 hurdles…the 300 hurdles. Then, after the 300 hurdles, there’s the 200-meter run and the mile run. That will give him the opportunity for a little rest.” With the time that those two races will consume, Sapp should be sufficiently revived for the 4×400 relay.
