With an agreement between the City of Port Isabel and the Laguna Madre Humane Society in place, the task at hand is to now define what the shelter represents and who will be doing what.
City Manager Ed Meza and LMHS President Beth Fedigan met Thursday morning to continue discussions on the operations and both have stated that this will not be a “No Kill” shelter but it will operate in a way that will best serve the animals and the citizens.
“We want to get a clear message,” said Fedigan, “ that the priority of the LMHS and the City is to find homes for these animals and we do not want to have a specified date or time-line determine the success of getting them placed. If it requires extra time for some animals to find homes then we are going to be able to take that time.”
The City took control of the facility Tuesday morning thus taking over the day to day operations. This includes cleaning, maintenance, documentation, registrations and certifications of employees. LMHS will focus on facilitating adoptions, addressing overcrowding, spay and neuter programs, education and working with volunteers.
