Sidewalk project continues for Port Isabel

Construction of new sidewalks in Port Isabel continues and immediate feedback is nothing but positive. The city is work­ing with private construc­tion companies to complete this project which Mayor Joe Vega says is vital.

“This is about public safety,” said Vega, “from kids walking to school to places that have high pe­destrian traffic, these side­walks will be a big help.”

Public Works Director for Port Isabel Balde Alaniz has had his crews working on this project since the commissioners approved it a few months ago.

“My guys are hard at it,” said Alaniz, “the mayor and the commissioners wanted us to do this for the safety of the public and this couldn’t be going any smoother than it is right now. It also gives my guys a good feeling to be doing something that they can hear people in the public saying that this is a good thing.”

Already new sidewalks have been constructed along Basin and Champion Streets. Additional work has been completed along 2nd Street and currently crews are working toward more walkways along 3rd
