Lady Tarpons overwhelm Grulla, 62-9

By LARRY GAGE

It was a rather one-sided game Tuesday night as the Port Isabel girls’ roundball team easily won their game with the Lady Gators of Grulla, 62-9.

“They’ve had a rough season,” head coach Alan Ward said in a silent gym afterwards.  “They’re mostly sophomores and juniors and I don’t know how much any of them have ever played before…not much, apparently.”

Port Isabel led 38-1 at halftime and 48-7 at the start of the fourth quarter.

“I told them we weren’t going to try to run up the score,” Ward told me.

The final margin of victory, as well as the quarter leads, was only a little more than in the teams’ first encounter on Dec. 31.  The Ladies led that one 32-3 at the break and won 56-11.
