The Christmas Bird Count is in full swing in the Rio Grande Valley.

For over 100 years, both North and South Americans have been picking one day of the year, usually around Christmas, to go out and tally up the birds that inhabit their area.

The South Padre Island-Port Isabel group had their hands full this past Saturday with their binoculars and bird catalogs trying to get an accurate count.

Tuesday, December 14, 2010 to Wednesday, January 5, 2011 is the time frame for this year’s count.
