Sweet 16 InvitationalFive teams ranked in the top 25 in the state of Texas will be competing for the title in this weekend’s 7th Annual Spaw Glass South Padre Island Sweet 16 Invitational, scheduled for December 3-4 at two locations, the SPI Convention Centre and at Port Isabel High School.

Headlining the field is Marcus High School of Flower Mound, TX, ranked #1 in the state in the 5A classification.  The Marauders are currently 4-0 on the season and defeated the nation’s #7 ranked team, Oklahoma City Douglas 81-73 on Saturday.   Coach Denny Henderson’s team comes into the tournament as the team to beat, and opens play on Friday at 1.30 p.m. vs. Harlingen South at the Convention Centre.  The Hawks (5-1) enter the tourney on a winning note following last weekend’s 46-44 win over Harlingen to win the Keillor Classic.

In addition to top-ranked Flower Mound Marcus, four other teams in the field are ranked in the state poll.  Spring Dekaney (4-3) is ranked 15th in 5A and faces Hanna High of Brownsville at 9.00 a.m. in the first round at Port Isabel High School.  St. Thomas of Houston (10-2) is ranked #12 among private schools and faces highly-regarded Roma at 1.30 Friday at Port Isabel.
